Part 3: PRETOX
From the moment you take that first sip of your drink of choice tonight, your liver will be working hard to filter the alcohol out of your system. And when tomorrow morning rolls around, following many more sips of many more drinks, it could use a little assistance!
Consider for a second though, prevention over cure. What if you could “pre-tox” and significantly reduce the need to “detox” the morning after? Sounds pretty damn good, right? Let’s dig a little deeper…
If you’ve been following The Hangover Series, you know that alcohol depletes your body of many vital nutrients – one of many contributing factors to that gross, seedy feeling the morning after. Two big ones to consider here are B Vitamins and Magnesium.
While B12 tends to get a lot of attention in the health world – and rightly so – there are other members of the B-family that are even more important when drinking alcohol. Think of the B’s as “assistants” that help your body get rid of the breakdown products of alcohol – (remember ACE from part 1?). Unfortunately though, alcohol depletes your existing Vitamin B stores making it crucial to top these guys up both before and after your big night!
Magnesium is a vital nutrient that many people are already deficient in, so adding alcohol to the equation is less than ideal. This guy is required for literally hundreds of metabolic reactions and (like Vitamin C) supports the alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme that breaks down alcohol and eliminates it from the body.
Here’s what to do:
1. Get your hands on a quality B Vitamin – I like to use Mega B Q10 by BioCeuticals, which is available at most chemists – and take 1 capsule at least 30 minutes before you start drinking + another before you go to bed, or first thing in the morning. Mega B Q10 also has Vitamin C which is important for reducing alcohol-induced oxidative stress in your liver, and coenzyme Q10 to promote energy production and provide support during times of increased stress – such as that induced your 10 hour drinking sesh!
2. Grab yourself a potent Magnesium supplement. Hopefully you are all taking this daily anyway, but if not, I recommend Ethical Nutrients. Take 1-2 tablets before you start drinking (along with your Mega B capsules) and another 1-2 before you go to bed, or first thing in the morning.
NOTE: high doses of Magnesium can cause loose bowels in some people, so go for the lower dosage if this isn’t something you usually take.
Oh, and if you’re looking for a little treat to enjoy while you curl up on the couch, consider a quality dark chocolate – my fave is the Pana Chocolate range. (YUM!). Not only are their flavours AHHmazing, but cacao also provides an extra kick of Magnesium to help bring your body back to life. Perfect!
Happy Friday, sweet things. Stay safe! xx
